A historic marker stands in front of the Baldwin County Courthouse, April 16, 2023, in Bay Minette, Alabama. The 1901 courthouse was built in the Federalist architectural style and has been renovated several times. The county seat was located in the City of Daphne from 1868-1901. When the Alabama Legislature moved the county seat to Bay Minette, the Daphne officials refused to relinquish the records, prompting the men of Bay Minette to hatch an elaborate scheme to steal the records and bring them to Bay Minette. Bay Minette, named for a French surveyor, was incorporated as a city in 1907. It has a population of 8,107 people. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
