HESCO barriers lie stacked on the west end of Dauphin Island, Alabama, where efforts to protect the island from oil threatening as a result of the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion earlier in the month were heavily underway May 7, 2010. The National Guard spent most of the day installing nearly four miles of the felt-like boxes and filling them with sand chemically treated to transform the oil into a solid which can be safely removed.
