Barton Academy, which was the first public school in Alabama, is pictured, Oct. 31, 2020, in Mobile, Alabama. The historic Greek Revival school building was built in 1836 and was used as a hospital for Union soldiers in 1864. It was also used as the central office for the Mobile county Public School System. In 2005 and 2009, Barton Academy was listed as a historic place in peril. It has since been restored and will reopen to students in 2021 as Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies, serving grades 6-9 and focusing on global studies and entrepreneurship.
