The sun sets on the borrow pit lake — where the dirt was extracted to create the park's 26 earthen mounds — at Moundville Archaeological Park in Moundville, Alabama. The site was used by the Mississippian culture of Indians between 1000 A.D. and 1450 A.D. The mounds are believed to have been used for religious ceremonies, burials, and residences of influential tribe leaders. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
