A historic marker at the Ground Zero Hurricane Museum thanks the volunteers who helped Mississippi after Hurricane Camille, April 3, 2021, in Waveland, Mississippi. The museum, which opened in 2016, is dedicated to telling the story of Hurricane Camille and Hurricane Katrina’s impact on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Hurricane Camille heavily damaged the city in 1969. Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Waveland on Aug. 29, 2005, bringing a 26-foot storm surge and killing 50 people. Every public building in town was destroyed with the exception of Waveland Elementary School, which now houses the Ground Zero Musum. The Tudor Revival building was constructed in 1931 and operated as a school until it was damaged by Hurricane Camille. It is listed on the National register of Historic Places. (Photo by Carmen K.
