Marianne, The Goddess of Liberty is displayed at the History Museum of Mobile, Aug. 24, 2017, in Mobile, Alabama. The 18-foot tall terra cotta statue was placed on top of the Mobile County Courthouse in 1889 and remained there until 1917 when it was removed after sustaining hurricane damage the previous year. She holds the torch of enlightenment and wears the Phrygian cap of freedom. An eagle at her feet represents freedom and independence. Marianne is a national symbol of the French Republic.
