Belk is the only store remaining at the once-thriving Singing River Mall, May 11, 2023, in Gautier, Mississippi. The mall , built in 1980, closed in October 2013 and was demolished in February 2014. Belk department store is the only store that stayed onsite. The City of Gautier plans to develop a town center on the remaining 55 acres. Shopping malls began to decline in 2007, with Newsweek calling the indoor shopping mall concept “obsolete” in 2008. At the height of the mall craze in the 1980’s, there were 2,500 malls.
