A pier overlooks the Escatawpa River at the Riverfront Park boat launch, April 25, 2021, in Moss Point, Mississippi. The Escatawpa River is a 129-mile long river that flows through Mississippi and Alabama. It is a tributary of the Pascagoula River. The name “Escatawpa” comes from a Choctaw words meaning, “where cane is cut.” Moss Point was incorporated in 1901 and was originally named Mossey Point due to the proliferation of Spanish moss hanging from the trees. In the early 1900s, Moss Point had many thriving sawmills and was internationally known as a major pine lumber export center. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
