A 1907 watering trough, presented by the National Humane Alliance, is pictured, March 6, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. The granite drinking fountain is one of 125 granite drinking fountains installed throughout the U.S. and Mexico to provide fresh drinking water for horses, dogs, cats, and people. The National Humane Alliance was founded in 1897 by Hermon Lee Ensign, a philanthropist and animal welfare advocate who left much of his wealth to build animal drinking fountains for any city that requested one. The fountains were installed from 1904 to 1912 by Bodwell Granite Company. The upper bowl was intended for horses while the lower bowls were intended for cats, dogs, and other small animals.
