A square knot, also known as a reef knot or Hercules knot, is tied in a display at the Pensacola Lighthouse, Oct. 27, 2019, in Pensacola, Florida. Sailors use square knots to secure the foot of a sail to the boom of a ship or for reefing a sail to make it smaller when the wind is too strong. It is useful as a temporary tie to secure light loads or in situations where it may need to be quickly untied.
