A statue of Bernardo de Galvez stands in Spanish Plaza, Feb. 27, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. Galvez was the governor of Spanish Louisiana, helping France and the newly-formed United States fight against the British. In March 1780, he recaptured Mobile from the British at the Battle of Fort Charlotte. Mobile was ruled by Spain from 1780 to 1813. Spanish Plaza on Government Street was created to honor Mobile’s connection with its sister city, Malaga, Spain. The park features sculptures, statues, and art honoring the influence that Spain had over the area. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
