A memorial for four Vietnamese children murdered in 2008 stands in Mariner Park, Jan. 6, 2022, in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. The four children — Danny Luong, Lindsey Luong, Hannah Luong and Ryan Phan — died on Jan. 7, 2008 when their father, Lam Luong, threw them off the Dauphin Island Bridge because he was angry with their mother. The children ranged in age from a four-month-old infant to a three-year-old toddler. Luong was convicted and sentenced to death in 2009, but the sentence was overturned by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals and reduced to life in prison without parole after the ACLU successfully argued that Luong was intellectually impaired.
