Major R. H. Slough, the Confederate mayor of Mobile from 1861-1865, is pictured at Magnolia Cemetery, Nov. 26, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. Slough was famous for quelling a bread riot in the city in 1864 and surrendering the city after the Battle of Mobile Bay. The 120-acre cemetery contains more than 80,000 graves, including those of governors, congressmen, writers, and other famous Mobilians.
