Wooden barricades offer privacy in the latrine at Fort Gaines, Aug. 12, 2021, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The 10-seat latrine was “self-flushing,” with waste carried out to sea twice a day by the tide. The siege of Fort Gaines occurred during the American Civil War. Confederate troops surrendered the fort to the Union on Aug. 8, 1864. The Fort is on the National Register of Historic Places and is listed as one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust For Historic Preservation. (Photo by Carmen K.
