Grace Lutheran Church is pictured, March 5, 2022, in Mobile, Alabama. The church, established by German immigrants in 1867, was the first Lutheran congegation in Alabama. The church was originally named Freie Deutsche Evangelische Lutherische Gemeinde, or the Free German Evangelical Lutheran Congregation, but was renamed Gruce Lutheran Church in 1918. Services were conducted exclusively in German until 1876 and in German and English until 1940. The current church was built on Government Street in 1953.
