An oil painting of French explorer Henri de Tonti hangs at the History Museum of Mobile, Nov. 21, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. De Tonti was born in 1649 and was one of the first explorers to navigate and sail the Great Upper Lakes. He established peace between the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians of Louisiana, who thought his prosthetic hand held magical powers. He earned the nickname “Iron Hand” for the hooked device he wore.
