A green heron (Butorides virescens) watches a fish swimming near a jetty, Aug. 27, 2022, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. Green herons are short, stocky birds that feed primarily on fish. They can be found year-round on the Gulf Coast. Dauphin Island is classified as a “Globally Important Bird Area” or Global IBA by the American Bird Conservancy and is often the first land stop for migratory birds. (Photo by Carmen K.
