Tate Reeves closed the state’s schools in March to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, an infectious disease first identified in Wuhan, China in 2019. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on Jan. 30, 2020, upgrading it to a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
