During the battle, the Scots, led by Robert the Bruce, regained control of Stirling Castle, which had been occupied by the English. It was an important victory in the First War of Scottish Independence, eventually leading to the 1328 Treaty of Edinburgh–Northampton, which secured Scottish independence from England.
