A statue of St. Francis of Assisi stands in a small parish cemetery at Spring Hill College, March 14, 2021 , in Mobile, Alabama. The cemetery, known as Springhill Catholic Cemetery or Springhill Parish Cemetery, was established in the 1830s. One of the first burials was that of Father Peter Mauvernay, the third president of the college. The private Jesuit college was founded in 1830 by Michael Portier, a Catholic bishop in Mobile. It is the fifth oldest Catholic college in the United States and the third oldest member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. St. Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Basque Catholic priest and theologian who founded the Society of Jesus, a Jesuit order dedicated to teaching and mission work. (Photo by Carmen K.
