People gather for the “We Still Can’t Breathe: Mobile’s Call to Action” protest against police brutality in Cathedral Square, May 31, 2020, in Mobile, Alabama. Local group “Mobile for Us” organized the protest in response to the death of African-American George Floyd who died while being arrested in Minneapolis, Minnesota. on May 25, 2020. Police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for Floyd's death. In witness videos, Chauvin can be seen with his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds as Floyd repeatedly says, “I can’t breathe.” During the last 2 minutes and 53 seconds, Floyd was unresponsive, according to the criminal complaint filed against Chauvin. Chauvin and three other officers who participated in the arrest were fired from the Minneapolis Police Department the next day.
