Coden United Methodist Church, like most American churches, is closed this Easter to prevent exposing worshippers to the Covid-19 virus, April 11, 2020, in Coden, Alabama. The infectious novel coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, China in 2019. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on Jan. 30, 2020, upgrading it to a pandemic on March 11, 2020. More than 1.8 million people had been diagnosed with the virus worldwide as of April 11, 2020, with new cases added daily. The United States currently has more diagnosed cases of the virus — and more deaths — than any other country, and many states, including Alabama, have restrictions in place to encourage social distancing. Alabama had 3,262 cases and 93 deaths as of April 11, 2020. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
