Government Plaza, erected in 1994 at a cost of $73 million, is 325 feet tall and is the first structure in the country to combine county and municipal governments and the court system in one space. It is the 10th tallest building in Alabama. The building was renamed in 2013 to honor outgoing mayor Sam Jones. The building is now officially named Samuel L. Jones Government Plaza.
