A historic marker tells the story of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of the small coastal community of Long Beach, Aug. 31, 2021, in Long Beach, Mississippi. The community was settled in 1788 and was incorporated in 1905. Long Beach was heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina, which struck shortly after the city’s centennial in 2005, bringing a 28-foot storm surge. The hurricane destroyed most of the buildings near the shoreline, and business has still not recovered to pre-Katrina levels. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
