A historic markerstands near the childhood home of Vivian Malone Jones, Sept. 30, 2023, in Mobile, Alabama. Vivian Malone was the first African-American to graduate from the University of Alabama. She is famous for confronting Gov. George C. Wallace during “the Stand at the Schoolhouse Door” as he attempted to bar her admission to the all-white university on June 11, 1963. In October 1996, Jones was chosen by the George Wallace Family Foundation to be the first recipient of its Lurleen B. Wallace Award of Courage.
