The American fast food chain recently announced that it is increasing hourly wages by approximately 10 percent at 660 locations throughout the United States. The wage increase will not apply to franchise restaurants. McDonald’s announced the wage increases amid threats of a worker strike scheduled to occur, May 19, 2021, in 15 cities across the United States. Strike organizers are demanding a wage increase to $15 per hour for all employees in all McDonald’s restaurants. Fast food companies around the nation are scrambling to recover from the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, with McDonald’s planning to hire 10,0000 more hourly employees over the next three months. McDonald’s recently announced fiscal first quarter earnings that topped market expectations and signaled the fast food chain’s return to pre-pandemic sales levels.
