A Civil War cannon is painted for Mardi Gras on Government Street, Feb. 21, 2022, in Mobile, Alabama. The cannon, which weighs more than 16,000 pounds, was used at Fort Morgan during the American Civil War. The cannon has been at the intersection of Government Street and Houston Street since 1953 and is a local landmark. Mobile claims to be the home of the first, original Mardi Gras, a tradition dating back to 1703. The city of New Orleans also claims to be the home of the first Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras traditionally begins on January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, and ends the day before Ash Wednesday. Mobile’s traditional Mardi Gras colors are purple and gold, symbolizing justice and power. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
