A sign tells the legend of the 500-year-old Friendship Oak, Oct. 22, 2019, in Long Beach, Mississippi. The Southern live oak tree is located on the Gulf Park campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. It dates back to 1487 and is registered with the Live Oak Society. In 2011, the tree was measured at 59 feet tall, with a trunk circumference of nearly 20 feet and a crown spread of 155 feet. According to legend, those who stand in the tree’s shadow will remain friends thoughout their lives.
