Barton Academy, the first public school in Alabama, is pictured, Nov. 30, 2022, in Mobile, Alabama. The historic Greek Revival school building was built in 1836 and was used as a hospital for Union soldiers in 1864. It was also used as the central office for the Mobile County Public School System. In 2005 and 2009, Barton Academy was listed as a historic place in peril. It has since been restored and reopened to students in 2022 as Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies, serving grades 6-9 and focusing on global studies and entrepreneurship. (Photo by Carmen K.
