A diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) swims in an aquarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium, June 29, 2021, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The diamondback terrapin is native to the northeastern and southern United States as well as Bermuda. In the 1900s, the species was considered a delicacy and was almost hunted to extinction, and it is still considered a vulnerable species. The public aquarium offers education and exhibits focusing on the Mobile Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico..
