A painted lion is among the fanciful zoo animals at the Dentzel Carousel Jan. 15, 2011 in Meridian, Miss. The carousel, which was built in 1896, is hand-carved and painted and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of only 11 carousels nationwide to be named a National Landmark, and it is located in the only carousel building that remains from Dentzel's original blueprint.
