A 19th century shipwreck is pictured at Fort Gaines with the fort’s northwest bastion cannon in the background, Aug. 12, 2021, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The remains of the ship washed ashore during Hurricane Georges in 1998. The siege of Fort Gaines occurrred during the American Civil War. Confederate troops surrendered the fort to the Union on Aug. 8, 1864.
