A historic marker stands at the site of a former slave market, Aug. 14, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. The slave ship Clotilda arrived in Mobile in 1860, bringing the last known illegal shipment of slaves to the United States. The Atlantic slave trade had been banned since 1808, but slave markets continued throughout the South at sites such as this one. The Mobile slave market is listed on the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
