An electronic sign on Interstate 10 East warns motorists of a police checkpoint ahead during the COVID-19 pandemic, April 4, 2020 in Robertsdale, Alabama. Florida is screening all interstate traffic, redirecting travelers from COVID-19 hot spots like Louisiana, to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, an infectious disease first identified in Wuhan, China in 2019. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on Jan. 30, 2020, upgrading it to a pandemic on March 11, 2020. More than 1.2 million people had been diagnosed with the virus worldwide as of April 5, 2020, with new cases added daily. Florida had 12,151 cases and 218 deaths as of April 5, 2020. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued the order in March, requiring travelers from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Louisiana to self-quarantine for 14 days once they enter the state. Those who break the rules are subject to a $500 fine and/or 60 days in jail. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
