It was designed by architect James Knox Taylor in the Classical Revival architectural style. The building is constructed of 1,200 tons of marbe reinforced with galvanized iron clamps. The $100,000 building was predicted to withstand hurricanes, earthquakes, and other events for at least 1,000 years.
