A MAECO equipment operator moves stacks of HESCO barriers on the west end of Dauphin Island, Alabama, where efforts to protect the island from oil threatening as a result of the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion earlier in the month were heavily underway May 7, 2010. The National Guard spent most of the day installing nearly four miles of HESCO barriers and filling the felt-like boxes with sand chemically treated to transform the oil into a solid which can then be safely removed.
