A Gulf Coast Smooth Softshell turtle swims in Gaillard Lake at the Audubon Bird Sanctuary, June 17, 2021, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. Smooth softshell turtles have a leathery skin carapace instead of a hard shell and a tubular snout with nostrils. Their range extends from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary, established in 1961, features 164 acres of woodland trails that meander through pines, magnolia trees, marshes, dunes, swamps, and beaches. Dauphin Island is classified as a “Globally Important Bird Area” or Global IBA by the American Bird Conservancy and is often the first land stop for migratory birds.
