Waves erode the east end of Dauphin Island on a stormy winter day, Jan. 3, 2023, in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The 14-mile long barrier island is part of a chain of islands that run the length of the Mississippi Sound. The island is gradually shrinking and shifting westward due to erosion and overwash, with sea level rise contributing to the total land loss. The island has been called "the canary in the coal mine" of climate change. Land mass has decreased on the island by 16 percent over the past 50 years, and the western end of the island is predicted to be underwater within 30-40 years. (Photo by Carmen K.
