A historic marker stands in front of one of a Sherman bow tie on the Meridian Civil War Trail, June 22, 2019, at the Meridian Railroad Museum in Meridian, Mississippi. Union troops destroyed Confederate railroad lines during Major General William Tecumseh Sherman's 1864 March to the Sea, deliberately bending the iron rails so they could not be used again. Meridian’s railroad tracks were important to the Confederacy during the Civil War. Union troops destroyed approximately 115 miles of track, 61 bridges, 20 locomotives, 28 steam cars, and 3 steam sawmills during the war. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
