Jean Baptist LeMoyne Sieur de Bienville is pictured at the Fort of Colonial Mobile, Nov. 6, 2021, in Mobile, Alabama. The original fort, which was named Fort Conde, was built by the French in 1723 to defend the port, but it was seized by the British in 1763 and rennamed Fort Charlotte. In 1780, the fort was seized by Spain and renamed Fort Carlotta. It was seized by U.S. troops in 1813, then was dismantled in 1820 to make room for the growing city. This version of the fort is smaller and in a slightly different location from the original fort. It is now named the Fort of Colonial Mobile. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
