The Romanesque church was built in 1854 and is the oldest documented Methodist church building in Alabama. The church was founded in 1829 as the African Church of the City of Mobile, a mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The congregation joined the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church after the Civil War. The building is listed in the National egister of Historic Places and is a designated Alabama landmark.
